This weekend in New York was hot. Like, really hot. So hot that summer activities in NYC which would normally be enjoyable, like hanging out in the park or taking a stroll, became unbearable.
On these types of weekends, I run away.
I was blessed to be able to spend my childhood summers on the North Fork of Long Island at a family beach house. My siblings and I enjoyed long days filled with swims in the bay, games of running bases, and meals made up of the freshest that the farm stand and the fish market had to offer.
These days I don’t get to spend my whole summer out there but I still head “out east” as often as I can, especially when a heat wave hits the city.
Here are some of my favorite local spots:
MAGIC FOUNTAIN ICE CREAM
This all-homemade ice cream shop has been around for over 40 years. They have crazy flavors (avocado?) but their soft serve vanilla is the true all-star.
This adorably named street has great little shops. I love the Village Cheese, where you can sample cheese and wine or even grab a quick lunch on the sunny patio.
SCHMITT’S FARM COUNTRY FRESH
This farm stand is where my mom would get all of our fresh produce when we were growing up, and I still make sure to stop in whenever I’m in town. They also have AMAZING pies and pastries.
